Final Evaluation

The four advertisements that I have created conform to the media language of my statement of intent as I said that I wanted to use the method of card stacking in my advertisement, which I think I did successfully. Card stacking is when you tell half truths, and I feel as though I did this in my advertisement through the tagline. My tagline for all of the advertisements is 'Think, Feel, Wave'. This is card stacking as you may not necessarily think or feel 'wave', but I feel as though it is a good selling point and will appeal to the target audience of both men and women aged between 16 and 25. All of my advertisements also uses plain folk in order to appeal to the target audience. I used everyday people rather than professional models, which I feel will appeal to the target audience more due to the fact that I have used people in real life situations, helping them to feel more comfortable when buying the product. When conducting my audience research, I was able to find out that people preferred the colour of the text white rather than black as it was more physically appealing. I did aim to use white font on all of my text however some of the backgrounds were too light to be able to show a white font, so I had to use black font where this  Additionally, I decided to go with a minimal look to the advertisements in order to reflect the values and main aims of the brand 'Wave'. Most of the models are also using a direct mode of address, which directly engages the audience and may entice them to buy the product.

I feel as though I have successfully represented my target audience by including different aspects of the advertisement that I feel relate to or represent both men and women between the ages of 16 and 25. Generally, in the media, people between the ages of 16 and 25 are generally presented as energetic and active and this is something that is portrayed in the media a lot. However, I decided to not directly show this in my advertisement but to include subtle hints instead. For example, in the first 2 advertisements, both models are wearing costumes that could possibly hint that people aged between 16 and 25 are energetic, such as hoodies and a full tracksuit. The advertisements do not show any physical activity but I feel as though it was implied through the clothing. In the last advertisement, I have included a costume that does not imply energy and being active. The model is, however, wearing bright colours which could be an indication that the target audience is energised and generally an active generation. I feel as though, for the most part, I used gender neutral clothing which could represent that this is a unisex product suitable for everyone.

For all of my advertisements, I used Photoshop to create them and design the layout that I used in my final advertisements. I also used Photoshop to create the logo and bottle design that is featured in all of my advertisements. By using the same bottle design and logo design, as well as the same tagline throughout, it connects all of the advertisements together and creates a uniformed look, and will therefore relate to each other when advertised in 'Total Film' magazine. Additionally, I included social media links, which I found out from my audience research would appeal to the target audience, as many young people between the ages of 16 and 25, both men and women use social media and they felt that this would be a good way of spreading popularity of the product.

For the final designs, I used a sans serif font and kept the design of the advertisements minimalistic, as this is something I felt would appeal to the target audience and is something that, when reviewing the audience research, most of the respondents did feel that a white font was the best one to use, creating the clinical and minimalistic feel to the product. For my final advertisement designs, I did shoot in 2 locations, one of which being a brick wall. I felt that this would appeal to the audience as it is an urban location whilst still retaining a minimalistic feel that would echo through the product. I still believe that the product as portrayed through my 4 final advertisement designs suits the needs of both the mainstream and the explorer when reviewing the Young and Rubicam 4C's model. This is because I have featured every day people in my advertisements, with no celebrity endorsements or familiar faces and this may directly relate to the target audience, allowing them to connect directly with the product and its values. Additionally, I feel as though I have managed to connect to the explorer audience through the tagline of 'think, feel, wave' as it entices them and their adventurous personalities, which is something that I aimed to do within my final designs.

Typography, Logo and Product Design

Logo design 1
Logo design 2

Product design 1
Product design 2

These are the logo and product design ideas that I had for my 'wave' product and overall, I think that they are good designs that appeal to the target audience of both men and women between the ages of 16 and 25. However, between designing the logos and designing the products, I decided to take the text of 'logo design 1' and use the image of 'logo design 2' in order to create my final logo. I felt as though this was a good idea as it combined both ideas but still made it accessible for the target audience. I chose this particular font as it is a sans serif font, which has connotations of professionalism, minimalism and cleanliness, all of which are things I wanted to convey in my logo and product design. I also decided to use a thin font when writing 'anti-perspirant' and '48 hour protection' as it contrasts with the bold logo and bright colours of the image.

For the bottle design, I decided to choose News Gothic MT Italic for the 'anti-perspirant' and '48 hour protection' as I felt that this is a font that would most relate to the target audience of both men and women between the ages of 16 and 25. It has a thin typeface and relates to a minimalist and clinical feel, which is something that is important as this could convey a clean feel that is a good thing to be associated with a deodorant brand.
I decided to use this design for the text basis of my logo design as I felt it was modern, but also related to the theme of 'wave' well. I was able to put the letters together to create a wavy effect, which relates to the theme of 'wave', but in a more subtle way, as the main logo image was a more direct connection with the theme. I decided to use black, as it contrasts with the white bottle and relates to the minimal theme that I plan to run through my advertisement.

This is the tool that I used to create the image logo. I drew a template of a logo, imported the template into photoshop and then used the lasso tool to create a digital template in which then I filled in with the colours I chose, which was both dark blue and light blue, as I felt that this would give it a 3D effect but would also relate to the title of 'wave'.

Main Image

This particular image meets the needs of my target audience due to the fact that the model is a man that appears to be between the ages of 16 and 25. This is one example of the target audience and so the target audience may be drawn to this and it may then persuade them to buy the product. Although the image is not bright and vibrant, it still fits with a modern style which may appeal to the target audience. He is also using direct mode of address which could appeal to the audience.

This particular image I feel will attract the target audience due to its bright colours and vibrancy. The bright colours may entice a younger audience and get them interested in the advertisement which may lead them to being interested by the product itself. Additionally to this, it also may interest the target audience due to the model being a woman that appears to be between the ages of 16-25.

This particular image is something I feel will get the target audience into the product due to the fact that it includes both male and females in the advertisement, which could show the target audience that it is suitable for both men and women and is a unisex product. They also appear to be the target audience and are looking directly at each other, which is something that I aim to do when shooting my images.

This particular image I feel could relate to the target audience because they appear to be the same age as the target audience. I aim to use this style of image but with two female models, possibly to show diversity in my images but also to further emphasise that this is a unisex product for people aged 16 to 25.

For all the above images, I decided to use the 'plain folk' aspect of advertisement, by using everyday people to model for my advertisement and not using professional models. I feel as though this will be the most suitable approach for my advertisement as it helps the target audience to relate to the advertisement better, as I have used real people in my advertisements and not professional models, which can be intimidating for people, specifically men and women between the ages 16 to 25, and they may feel pressured to be like the models in the advert. Relating to Young and Rubicam's 4C's model, I feel as though my advertisement would relate to the mainstreamer, as I am using regular everyday people to advertise the product, which is suitable for everyone.

Location Reports and Risk Assessment

Location 1

The first location that I shot in was a brick wall on site of Harlow College and is a brick wall outside of the performing arts department. This location can be found at Velizy Avenue, Harlow, Essex, CM20 3EZ. It is an urban landscape yet a simple background, which is why I chose it as my first location.

Location 2

The second location that I shot in was a small gardened area with an archway on the site of Harlow College and is located just outside of the A levels department. This location can be found at Velizy Avenue, Harlow, Essex, CM20 3EZ. It is an urban landscape yet a simple background, which is why I chose it as my first location and I also feel that it meets the needs of the audience (men and women between the ages of 16 and 25.

Equipment

For these shoots I intend to use:

> Canon 1300D DSLR camera to ensure that the quality of all images is good and that I am able to retain good shots to use in the advertisements

> Tripod to ensure the shot is secured and the shots do not come out shaky or altered in any way.

Location

As I decided to not use props in my advertisement, I decided I would explain the locations of both of my shoots. One of the locations that I used for my advertisement shoots was a brick wall. The main reason for choosing this is because it is a urban landscape location and I felt as though it may have interested the target audience of both men and women between the ages of 16 and 25. It creates a modern look to the advertisement without having too much in the background, so that the sole focus of the advertisement is the model and the products. The second location was an archway that is located in the college. I decided to shoot here as it was a visually pleasing location, but also because college is something that is possible for both men and women between the ages of 16 and 25, so I felt that it would directly relate to the target audience and make them think that the deodorant brand 'wave' is accessible to them always.

Costumes

Shoot 1, 2 & (Male and female shoot)

Male Costume

I decided to choose this outfit for my male shoot as I felt that this is an outfit that fits in the target audience of 16 to 25 because it is modern, but also because it could be seen as quite a neutral outfit that is suitable for both male and female styles. The contrast between the grey hoodie and the blue jeans allow something in the image to stand out, and this will contrast with the background, which is quite a muted colour.

Female Costume

I decided to choose this outfit for my female shoot as I felt that, like the first outfit for the male model, this is also quite a gender neutral outfit that could be worn by either a male or a female. I also decided to choose this because it contrasts well with the colour of the red brick background.

Shoot 3 and 4 (both female shoots)

Model 1

I decided to choose this outfit as it is a contrast from previous outfits that I have chosen, those being neutral outfits and this being a feminine outfit. I feel that this stands out from the crowd and also shows a clear contrast between the styles that people have. By including both styles, it further emphasises that the 'wave' brand is for everyone.

Model 2

Similarly to the above outfit, I decided to choose this outfit because it is gender neutral and directly contrasts the feminine outfit that is also present within the shoot. Additionally to this, the graphic design on the shirt also brings a certain level of vibrancy and saturation to the image, which may be useful in gaining the attention of the target audience. Having black sweatpants allows the main focus of the outfit to be solely on the graphic tee itself.

Final Images and Edits

Final Images Choices

These are the final images I have decided to use as my final layout images. In order for them to fit the criteria of the magazine layout, I had to add the bleed lines to ensure nothing went over these lines, and I also had to crop it to the correct size of a magazine advertisement layout, which is 22.2cm by 30cm.With the images in front of the archway, I decided to up the contrast of the images slightly to give the images a vibrant look. To do this, I increased the saturation by +25 and the hue by +3 to give the image a slightly more vibrant look so that it links in someway to the first advertisement and what a lot of respondents were most interested in.
